WMO Report Warns Earth Energy Imbalance Hit Record High in 2025

The World Meteorological Organization released its State of the Global Climate 2025 report on March 23, 2026, showing 2025 was approximately 1.43 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and ocean heat content set a new all-time high. The report also warned that the Earth energy imbalance has reached its highest level since observations began.

On March 23, 2026, the World Meteorological Organization released the State of the Global Climate 2025 report on World Meteorological Day. The report shows that in 2025, the global average temperature exceeded pre-industrial levels by approximately 1.43 degrees Celsius, ranking second or third hottest year since records began. For the first time, the report incorporates Earth energy balance status into its core climate indicators. Data shows that in 2025, the Earth's energy imbalance degree set a new record for observational records. At the same time, global ocean heat content once again set an all-time record high in 2025, with every year over the past nine years breaking records. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached the highest level in the past two million years in 2024, while methane and nitrous oxide concentrations also each set new highs. The World Meteorological Organization pointed out that extreme weather events around the world are increasingly frequent, posing serious challenges to food security and infrastructure. The United Nations Secretary-General called on all countries to make renewable energy transition a core strategy to address the climate crisis and ensure energy security.
