A large study found that shingles-vaccinated heart disease patients had a 46% lower risk of major cardiac events and a 66% lower risk of death. Findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting on March 28.

A new study shows that the shingles vaccine may have important protective effects for heart health. Researchers analyzed data from over 246,000 American adults diagnosed with atherosclerotic heart disease. The results found that vaccinated patients' risk of experiencing major cardiac adverse events was reduced by 46 percent. The risk of all-cause mortality among vaccinated individuals was also lower by 66 percent, with heart attack risk reduced by 32 percent. Researchers stated that this magnitude of risk reduction is comparable to the effects of quitting smoking. The study used two types of shingles vaccines: Shingrix and Zostavax. The research findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting held in New Orleans from March 28-30. Researchers noted that these results have not yet been formally published in peer-reviewed journals.
