FDA Commissioner Makary Resigns Amid White House Pressure

US FDA Commissioner Makary announced his resignation after clashing with the White House over approval of flavored e-cigarettes. Deputy Commissioner Diamantas will serve as acting director.

The FDA Commissioner Marty Makary announced his resignation on May 12, ending his approximately one-year term of office. The direct trigger for this resignation was the e-cigarette flavoring approval issue.

Makary had previously attempted to block agency scientists from approving flavored e-cigarettes, but Trump directly pressured him, demanding approval of relevant products. Additionally, Makary faced criticism from anti-abortion groups due to delays in safety research on mifepristone (the abortion pill).

Internal officials reported that Makary's tenure was marked by chaotic management, with several senior scientists resigning as a result. Deputy Commissioner Diamantas will serve as acting commissioner to oversee FDA operations.

Makary obtained Senate confirmation in March 2025, serving in the position for only approximately one year.
