Wildfire in Northeastern Japan Forces Over 1,000 People to Evacuate

A wildfire in Otsuchi town in Iwate Prefecture, northeastern Japan, burned over 200 hectares and forced more than 2,500 residents to evacuate.

A wildfire broke out in the northeastern Japanese town of Otsuchi on April 22nd afternoon. The fire spread rapidly across two locations simultaneously. The local government ordered 2,588 residents to evacuate immediately. By April 23rd, the wildfire had destroyed seven buildings and burned an area exceeding 200 hectares. Firefighters and Japan Self-Defense Forces helicopters participated in firefighting operations. The local weather department reported that dry conditions and strong winds hindered firefighting efforts. Currently, there are no reports of casualties, and rescue teams are working to control the fire spread.
