Lifestyle & CultureWHO Confirms Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship With Three Deaths
The WHO has confirmed a hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, with eight cases reported and three deaths.
The World Health Organization received a report on May 2 of a suspected hantavirus infection outbreak on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius.
As of May 8, eight cases have been reported, with six confirmed and two suspected. Three people have died, bringing the case fatality rate to 38 percent. All confirmed cases were identified as Andes virus, the only known hantavirus strain capable of human-to-human transmission.
The ship departed from Ushuaia, Argentina in early April and traveled through Antarctica and multiple South Atlantic islands. On May 10, the vessel arrived in Tenerife, Spain, where passengers gradually returned to their home countries.
The WHO states that hantavirus does not spread through everyday social contact. Public infection risk is extremely low.
