Lifestyle & CultureHantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Kills Three Near Cape Verde
A cruise ship named MV Hondius experienced a hantavirus outbreak near Cape Verde, resulting in three deaths and seven confirmed or suspected cases, prompting a WHO alert.
The MV Hondius cruise ship is carrying 147 passengers and crew members. This ship departed from Argentina and is currently anchored near Cape Verde in the Atlantic Ocean.
Three people on the ship have already died, with seven additional confirmed or suspected cases. The three deceased are a Dutch couple and a German citizen, respectively.
The World Health Organization states that the virus may be related to a type of hantavirus found in Argentina and cannot rule out the possibility of human-to-human transmission. Multiple countries have refused to allow the ship to dock at their ports.
Currently, Spain has agreed to allow the ship to head to the Canary Islands for further testing.
