Three Dead in Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak Aboard Atlantic Cruise Ship

Three passengers aboard the MV Hondius have died in a suspected hantavirus outbreak, with at least six people believed infected as the World Health Organization coordinates international medical evacuations.

The World Health Organization reported on May 3rd of a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship, named MV Hondius, is operated by Dutch adventure cruise company Oceanwide Expeditions and is currently sailing from Ushuaia to Cape Verde. Currently, three passengers have died, and at least six others are suspected of being infected, with one case confirmed by laboratory testing. One patient is currently in critical intensive care in South Africa with a critical condition. Hantavirus is typically transmitted through contact with infected rodent excrement and can cause severe pulmonary infection. The WHO indicated it is coordinating international cooperation to arrange medical evacuation for passengers with symptoms. This outbreak has again triggered public concern about cruise ship public health standards.
