Study Finds Greenland Ice Sheet Extreme Melt Events Have Surged Sixfold Since 1990

A study published in Nature Communications found that extreme melt events on the Greenland ice sheet have surged sixfold since 1990, with meltwater production jumping from 12.7 gigatons per decade to 82.4 gigatons per decade.

A study led by the University of Barcelona found that extreme melting events of the Greenland ice sheet are becoming increasingly frequent.

Compared to the past, the meltwater volume per decade since 1990 has increased from 12.7 gigatons to 82.4 gigatons, a sixfold increase.

Researchers found that among the ten most severe melting events on record, seven occurred after 2000.

The area of the ice sheet affected by melting has expanded by approximately 2.8 million square kilometers per decade since 1990.

Scientists warn that if greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase, record-breaking melting events may become the norm by the middle of this century.

Large-scale melting of the Greenland ice sheet will cause significant global sea level rise.
