Lifestyle & CultureLarge Study Finds Most Patients Who Stop GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs Do Not Experience Dramatic Rebound
A large real-world study of nearly 8,000 patients found that most people who stop GLP-1 weight loss drugs do not experience a dramatic weight rebound. The study showed patients lost an average of 8.4 percent before stopping and regained only 0.5 percent on average after one year.
A new study tracked approximately 8,000 patients who stopped using GLP-1 weight loss medications. GLP-1 medications include the widely-known semaglutide, sold under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy. The study found that significant weight rebound after stopping medication was not as common as previous clinical trials suggested. Patients had lost approximately 8.4% body weight before stopping, and after one year only regained 0.5%. Among those who stopped medication, 27% switched to other drugs within one year, 20% restarted their original medication. Additionally, 14% chose to maintain weight through dietary adjustments and exercise. Researchers noted that real-world patients have more flexible treatment options compared to clinical trial conditions. The most common reasons for stopping were cost and insurance issues, followed by side effects and medication shortages.
