Hantavirus Outbreak Kills 3 on Cruise Ship Moored Off Cape Verde

A cruise ship carrying 147 passengers and crew is moored off Cape Verde after a hantavirus outbreak killed 3 people and left several others ill, with the WHO reporting two laboratory-confirmed cases.

The World Health Organization confirmed that a cruise ship has discovered at least seven cases of hantavirus infection, with two cases confirmed through laboratory testing.

As of May 4th, three people have died, including a Dutch couple and a German citizen.

The initial cases were a couple who boarded in Argentina; authorities believe they were infected off the ship.

Hantavirus is typically transmitted through contact with contaminated rodent excretions and feces.

After the cruise ship arrived at Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde, authorities refused it permission to dock citing public health concerns.

The World Health Organization stated it has not yet ruled out the possibility of human-to-human transmission of the virus.
