The 79th Cannes International Film Festival officially opened on May 12th in Cannes, a city in southern France.
This edition of the film festival will run until May 23rd, with a total of 22 films competing for the top award, the Palme d'Or.
New Zealand director Peter Jackson will receive an honorary Palme d'Or at the opening ceremony.
American singer Barbra Streisand will also receive the same honorary award.
This year's jury president is renowned South Korean director Park Chan-wook.
The festival will open with a French period costume comedy film titled "The Electric Kiss."
The winner of the Palme d'Or will be announced at the awards ceremony on May 23rd.
