China & WorldCanada Pledges CAD$35 Billion to Strengthen Arctic Defence and Northern Infrastructure
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the government will spend nearly CAD$35 billion to strengthen Arctic military defence and infrastructure. Carney emphasized that Canada cannot rely on other countries to guarantee its security and must assert sovereign control over its northern territories.
On March 12, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced in Yellowknife, capital of the Northwest Territories, that the federal government will invest nearly CAD$35 billion to strengthen the Arctic region's defence infrastructure and economic development. The plan includes large-scale upgrades to forward operating locations in Yellowknife, Inuvik, and Iqaluit, with main funding amounting to approximately CAD$32 billion. The government also announced investing CAD$2.67 billion to establish four northern operational support bases, respectively located in Whitehorse and three communities in Nunavut territory. These newly built bases will enable Canadian armed forces to operate year-round in the Arctic and rapidly deploy forces in emergency situations. Prime Minister Carney stated that Canada must strengthen control over its northern territories and explicitly stated the country cannot continue to rely on other countries to guarantee its own security. The announced projects also include the Mackenzie Valley Highway extension, hydro expansion project, and Arctic Economic and Security Corridor and other major projects. Analysts believe this major investment is both a response to increasingly intense Arctic sovereignty disputes and reflects Canada's determination to seek strategic autonomy. Both Russia and China have shown increasingly strong interest toward the Arctic region's strategic resources and shipping lanes, making Canada's strengthening of Arctic defence especially urgent.
