China & WorldUN Security Council Delays Vote on Authorizing Force in Strait of Hormuz
The UN Security Council postponed a vote on April 3 on authorizing force to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, with China and Russia strongly opposing language that would legitimize military action.
On April 3, the United Nations Security Council postponed a vote on security issues regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
This vote originated from a draft resolution submitted by Bahrain, authorizing all countries to adopt all necessary defensive measures to ensure free passage through the strait.
After the Iran war broke out, oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz decreased by approximately 70 to 80 percent, severely impacting global oil supply.
However, China and Russia strongly opposed the wording authorizing the use of force.
China's UN representative Fu Cong stated that this move would legitimize the use of force and could lead to further escalation of the situation.
After multiple rounds of negotiations, the draft has deleted references to Chapter Seven of the UN Charter, but all parties still have disagreements.
Analysts believe that even if the resolution ultimately passes, lacking Chinese and Russian support would greatly diminish its actual binding power.
