NASA Announces Moon Base Plans With First Missions Targeting Fall 2026

NASA announced a moon base roadmap on May 26, planning three uncrewed lunar landing missions in 2026 ahead of crewed Artemis surface activities in 2028.

NASA Administrator Isaacman formally announced the moon base construction plan on May 26. The plan includes three initial missions, respectively executed by Blue Origin and Astrobotic landers. The first mission named Moon Base I aims to land near the lunar south pole, launching at the earliest this autumn. NASA also awarded approximately 220 million dollars contracts to Astrolab and Lunar Outpost respectively for developing lunar terrain vehicles. These unmanned missions aim to accumulate experience for the 2028 crewed moon landing mission, reducing risk. Isaacman stated that the moon base will be humanity's first outpost established on another celestial body.
