China & WorldIran Offers to Reopen Hormuz Strait if US Ends War and Lifts Blockade
Iran put forward a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the US lifts its blockade and ends the war. The US reviewed the proposal but officials said any deal must include the Iranian nuclear issue.
Iran proposed a plan to the United States: if America agrees to end the war and lift the blockade, Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The proposal was conveyed to the US through Pakistan in late April, and Iran simultaneously demanded that nuclear issue negotiations be postponed until after the war. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil transportation channels, with pre-war traffic accounting for approximately 20% of global oil transit.
Since the war broke out, Iran has effectively blocked the strait, with only a tiny number of ships able to pass through.
US Secretary of State Rubio clearly stated that the United States will not accept any agreement that excludes nuclear issues. The White House confirmed that Trump has discussed the Iranian proposal with senior advisors, but hinted that the likelihood of reaching an agreement is small.
Iran also hopes to cooperate with Oman to establish a mechanism for collecting transit fees from passing ships. Analysts point out that control of the Strait of Hormuz remains Iran's most important diplomatic bargaining chip in the current conflict.
