BusinessJapan and US Announce 73 Billion Dollar Strategic Investment Package Covering Small Modular Reactors and Critical Minerals
Japan announced an additional strategic investment of up to 73 billion dollars in the US at a White House summit, focused on small modular nuclear reactors and critical mineral supply chains. This second tranche follows the initial 36 billion dollar commitment in February, bringing total Japanese strategic investment in the US to nearly 110 billion dollars.
On March 19-20, Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced during a Washington White House summit that Japan will provide additional strategic investment of up to $73 billion to the United States.
This investment continues Japan's first-round $36 billion commitment from February, bringing cumulative strategic investment toward the US to nearly $110 billion.
Among these, the largest project involves GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Company committing to invest $40 billion to construct small modular nuclear reactors in Tennessee and Alabama states.
In addition, approximately $33 billion will be used to build natural gas power generation facilities in Pennsylvania and Texas to meet the surging electricity demand from US artificial intelligence data centers.
Both sides also signed the US-Japan Critical Minerals Action Plan to promote diversification of rare earth and battery materials mining, reducing strategic dependence on single sources.
In technology cooperation dimensions, the US Department of Energy and Japan's Ministry of Education and Science signed statements of intent to conduct in-depth cooperation on AI-driven scientific discovery, high-performance computing, and quantum technology.
Analysts believe this agreement marks the Japan-US alliance reaching new heights of strategic cooperation in energy security and supply chain resilience, reflecting both sides' shared willingness to strengthen industrial cooperation within great-power competition contexts.
