The WHO declared the Bundibugyo strain Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern on May 17. The outbreak has killed at least 87 people and there is currently no approved vaccine for this strain.
WHO declared the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo a public health emergency of international concern on May 17. The outbreak, caused by Bundibugyo strain virus, has no approved vaccines yet. As of May 15, 246 suspected cases and at least 87 deaths were reported. The outbreak concentrated in Ituri Province in northeastern DRC and has spread to neighboring Uganda. Bundibugyo Ebola has fatality rate reaching 50% and conventional rapid tests often cannot accurately identify it. WHO stated humanitarian crisis continues worsening in the region, presenting severe challenges for outbreak control. The international community has begun deploying medical resources and accelerating vaccine development.
