BusinessUS Opens Section 301 Trade Probes Against EU, China and Mexico as Trade War Deepens
The US Trade Representative office announced on March 11 formal Section 301 trade investigations against more than a dozen partners including the EU, China and Mexico. Analysts say the move could provide legal grounds for a new round of tariffs.
The Office of the US Trade Representative announced on March 11 that it will launch formal Section 301 trade investigations against more than twelve major trade partners. The investigation targets include the European Union, China, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea and other major economies. Official authorities stated that this investigation aims to evaluate the trade practices of the countries concerned whether they constitute unfair restrictions or discrimination against the United States. Section 301 is a legal authorization tool in American trade law that allows the government to impose tariffs when it determines that trade partners have unfair practices. Previously, the US Supreme Court ruled on February 20 that tariffs imposed by the government invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were unconstitutional, forcing authorities to seek other legal tools. The EU side stated that it will closely monitor investigation progress and reserve the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures. Analysts pointed out that if the investigation leads to new tariffs taking effect, it will further exacerbate global trade tensions and create greater impact on the already under-pressure global supply chain.
