Iran Refuses to Join Second-Round Islamabad Talks as US-Iran Ceasefire Comes Under Pressure

Iran says it will not send delegates to the second round of US-Iran talks in Islamabad, casting doubt over the ceasefire. Vice President Vance had been expected to lead the US delegation, but Iran held firm.

The United States and Iran reached a two-week ceasefire agreement on April 8th under Pakistan's mediation, ending recent armed conflicts. From April 11-12, both delegations held grueling negotiations lasting 21 hours in Islamabad, but failed to reach agreements on core issues including Iran's nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz. The second round of talks was originally scheduled for April 23rd in Islamabad with U.S. Vice President JD Vance leading the American delegation seeking further breakthroughs. However, Iran announced it would not dispatch negotiating representatives to Pakistan, raising questions about whether second-round talks can proceed as scheduled. Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy previously seized an Iranian cargo ship, further escalating tensions between the two sides.
