BusinessChina Agrees to Buy 200 Boeing Jets After Trump-Xi Summit, But Trade Gaps Persist
Trump and Xi held a summit in Beijing on May 15 where China pledged to buy 200 Boeing jets and increase agricultural purchases, but tariff disagreements persisted and experts said no breakthrough trade deal was reached.
U.S. President Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 15th at Zhongnanhai in Beijing.
After the talks concluded, Trump announced that the Chinese side agreed to purchase 200 Boeing passenger aircraft and increase procurement of U.S. agricultural products.
The two countries also announced the establishment of a trade committee to mediate bilateral trade disputes.
However, analysts pointed out that the summit failed to achieve substantive breakthroughs in trade.
Previously, the United States had imposed tariffs as high as 125 percent on Chinese imported goods, and the Chinese side subsequently adopted retaliatory countermeasures.
Both sides have notable divergences in characterizing the summit outcomes, revealing deep-seated structural contradictions between the two countries.
Markets expect both sides to extend the tariff truce agreement to maintain basic stability in bilateral trade and economic relations.
