US budget carrier Spirit Airlines ceased all operations on May 2, shutting down after years of financial struggles and two bankruptcies since 2024. Around 17,000 workers lost their jobs as a result.
On May 2nd, Spirit Airlines, a major U.S. low-cost carrier, suspended all flight operations and officially shut down.
This airline had already been operating for many years but had continuously been losing money. The company faced numerous problems: major airlines had copied its low-price model, and fuel prices had also risen due to the Iran war.
Spirit applied to the government for a $500 million bailout but was unsuccessful. The closure affected approximately 17,000 workers who lost their jobs and healthcare insurance.
