US Regulators Jointly Classify Bitcoin and 15 Other Cryptocurrencies as Digital Commodities

On March 17, 2026, the US Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission jointly issued guidance formally classifying Bitcoin and 15 other major cryptocurrencies as digital commodities. These digital assets will be regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and do not require registration with the SEC.
