China & WorldSamsung Exits China TV and Home Appliance Market After 34 Years
South Korean electronics giant Samsung announced it will cease all home appliance sales in mainland China, ending a 34-year presence. The retreat reflects the dominance of local Chinese brands and Samsung declining market share in the country.
South Korean electronics giant Samsung announced on May 6th that it will cease selling all home appliance products in mainland China.
The affected products include televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and multiple other product categories.
Data shows that Samsung's annual television sales volume in China has dropped from 2.55 million units in 2014 to fewer than 500,000 units.
Meanwhile, domestic brands such as Haier and Midea have rapidly captured market share by leveraging high value-for-money products.
Samsung stated that this exit does not affect its smartphone, semiconductor, and medical equipment businesses in China. The company also committed to continuing to provide after-sales services to protect existing customers' rights and interests.
This move is seen by analysts as a microcosm of the continued decline in competitiveness of foreign brands in China's home appliance market.
