China & WorldRussia and Ukraine Each Declare Separate Ceasefires Ahead of Victory Day
Russian President Putin announced a ceasefire for May 8 to 9, while Ukrainian President Zelensky declared his own ceasefire starting from late night on May 5.
Russian President Putin announced that Russia will implement a ceasefire from May 8-9 to commemorate the anniversary of World War II victory. Putin stated he hopes Ukraine will also observe the ceasefire, but warned that if Ukraine disrupts the celebrations, it will face retaliation.
Ukrainian President Zelensky subsequently also announced a ceasefire effective from midnight May 5-6. Zelensky emphasized that as of May 4, Ukraine had not yet received any formal ceasefire proposal from Russia.
Both countries announced ceasefires independently, but the conditions and terms are not identical. This ceasefire is viewed by observers as an exploratory step before the end of the war. However, whether both sides will truly comply remains to be observed.
