China & WorldRSF Report Says Global Press Freedom Has Fallen to Its Lowest Level in 25 Years
The 2026 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders shows global press freedom has reached a 25-year low, with over half of all countries now rated as difficult or very serious for journalists.
On the afternoon of May 4th, a workshop at Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing Company in Liuyang City, Hunan Province exploded.
The accident resulted in at least 26 deaths and 61 injuries.
Because the site contained large quantities of black powder, rescue operations proved extremely challenging.
Local police have already detained the company's manager.
China's State Council announced the formation of a special investigation team to probe the accident's causes.
Local authorities have also ordered all fireworks and firecracker manufacturers in Liuyang City to temporarily halt production and undergo safety inspections.
