Roche Announces Acquisition of AI Pathology Firm PathAI for Up to $1.05 Billion

Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche announced the acquisition of US AI pathology company PathAI, with an upfront payment of $750 million and a total deal value of up to $1.05 billion.

Roche announced on May 7th a definitive merger agreement with Boston-based startup PathAI.

PathAI specializes in developing AI-driven diagnostic tools for pathology laboratories and the biopharmaceutical industry.

Roche will incorporate PathAI into its diagnostics division to strengthen its positioning in the field of digital pathology.

The two companies have been collaborating since 2021 and expanded their joint research and development efforts in 2024.

This acquisition is expected to close in the second half of this year.

If relevant milestone targets are achieved, PathAI will receive an additional $300 million.

This is yet another major transaction in the pharmaceutical industry's AI diagnostics positioning.
