Water storage operations reached full reservoir capacity on June 3, marking successful completion of a critical construction phase. The Pinglu Canal upon completion will provide southwest China with a direct maritime outlet to the sea. The project is expected to officially open for navigation in September, at which time it will substantially reduce transport distances.
The Pinglu Canal will also facilitate trade flows between China and Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states. Completion of the project will significantly lower logistics costs in the region and promote regional economic development.
