Palestinians held their first municipal elections in Gaza in over 20 years on April 26. Candidates backed by Fatah won most seats, while voter turnout across the West Bank reached about 53 percent.
Palestine held local elections on April 26, with voting taking place in Deir al-Balah in Gaza and 183 cities in the West Bank. This was the first municipal election in the Gaza region in more than twenty years.
In Deir al-Balah, approximately 70,000 registered voters participated, with a turnout of about 22.7%. The West Bank saw a voting rate of approximately 53.4%, similar to previous local elections.
Fatah-backed candidates won many seats in both Gaza and the West Bank. Palestinian officials stated that these elections represent an important step toward presidential elections.
