China & WorldPeter Magyar Wins Hungary Election, Ending Viktor Orban 16-Year Rule
Hungary opposition leader Peter Magyar defeated incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban on April 12 with 53.6 percent of the vote, ending his 16-year rule. The Tisza Party won 138 of 199 parliamentary seats, securing a two-thirds supermajority.
Hungary held parliamentary elections on April 12th. The opposition Tisza Party secured an overwhelming victory in one sweep. Its leader, Peter Magyar, defeated the incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban with a vote share of 53.6 percent, while the latter received only 37.8 percent.
The Tisza Party won 138 seats out of the 199-seat parliament, achieving the supermajority required to amend the constitution. Voter turnout reached 76.5 percent, setting a record in Hungary's post-communist era.
Orban immediately conceded electoral defeat after vote counting concluded and expressed congratulations to Magyar. Magyar was originally a loyal supporter of Orban but broke away from him in recent years due to government corruption issues and founded the Tisza Party in 2023.
The election result is expected to reshape Hungary's relations with the EU. The EU had withheld approximately 90 billion euros in aid funds, which may now be released. EU officials stated that Magyar's election victory carries historic significance, and multiple governments also expressed welcome.
