Canada Finds OpenAI Violated Privacy Laws in ChatGPT Training

Multiple Canadian provincial privacy regulators jointly ruled that OpenAI violated privacy laws when training ChatGPT, collecting personal data without adequate safeguards.

Canada's federal Privacy Commissioner's office, along with counterpart agencies from Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta, jointly released investigation findings. The investigation found that OpenAI collected large amounts of personal information without appropriate protective measures. This information may include users' health status, political views, and children-related data.

Many users were unaware that their data was being used to train models. OpenAI has already agreed to adopt further measures to protect user privacy. However, British Columbia and Alberta believe that obtaining consent retroactively for already scraped data is insufficient.
