Google AI Researcher Noam Shazeer Joins OpenAI

Noam Shazeer, vice president of engineering and Gemini co-lead at Google DeepMind, announced he is leaving to join OpenAI. Shazeer co-authored the 2017 Transformer paper that underpins modern large language models.

Google DeepMind Vice President Noam Shazeer, who co-leads the Gemini AI models, announced he is departing Google to join OpenAI. Shazeer is a co-author of the foundational 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need," which introduced the Transformer architecture underlying virtually every major large language model today. Google recruited Shazeer back from AI startup Character.AI in 2024 at a reported cost of approximately $2.7 billion. His departure signals accelerating talent attrition at Google DeepMind. In the same period, Google also lost John Jumper, a Nobel laureate and leader of AlphaFold, who announced he is joining Anthropic. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that Shazeer is one of the people he has most wanted to work with since OpenAIs inception, calling the partnership ten years in the making. Industry observers view the talent competition as a reflection of intensifying rivalry in the AI sector.
