One Year After Deadly Myanmar Earthquake, Recovery Remains Fragile and Food Security Dire

One year after the magnitude-7.7 earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, UN agencies report that one sixth of households in the hardest-hit areas still face moderate to severe food insecurity.

One year has passed since a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, killing more than 3,800 people and displacing hundreds of thousands. A year after the disaster, reconstruction efforts in affected areas remain significantly slow. United Nations agencies report that one-sixth of households in disaster-stricken regions continue to face food insecurity.

Infrastructure repairs have been severely hindered by the complex political situation in Myanmar. The combination of devastating earthquake damage and ongoing political instability has created major obstacles to recovery and reconstruction efforts.
