Microsoft and OpenAI announced in late April that they have revised their partnership agreement, freeing OpenAI from exclusive ties to Microsoft Azure.
Microsoft and OpenAI jointly announced on April 27th that they have revised their partnership agreement, marking a new phase in the most important collaboration in the technology industry.
Under the new agreement, OpenAI's products can be deployed on any cloud service provider and are no longer limited to Microsoft's Azure platform.
On the financial side, Microsoft will no longer pay revenue sharing to OpenAI. However, OpenAI's revenue share payments to Microsoft will be capped, continuing through 2030. Microsoft will maintain intellectual property licenses for OpenAI's technology through 2032, and Azure will continue to receive priority deployment rights for the latest AI models.
This agreement restructuring follows OpenAI's major strategic partnership with Amazon, which pledged to invest up to $50 billion.
Analysts believe this move marks a profound shift in the competitive landscape of the artificial intelligence cloud market. Complex provisions regarding artificial general intelligence (AGI) in the original agreement have also been removed, simplifying the relationship between both parties.
