Meta Launches Private AI Chat Mode Where Conversations Are Not Stored

Meta launched its Incognito Chat feature on May 13, allowing users to chat privately with AI. The feature, first available on WhatsApp, automatically deletes conversations after they end.

Meta launched an incognito chat feature on WhatsApp and Meta AI on May 13th. In this mode, user conversations with AI will not be saved or viewed by Meta. According to the introduction, chat content is processed in a secure environment and automatically disappears after the conversation ends.

The timing of this feature launch is particularly notable because Meta just recently cancelled end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages. Digital rights organization EFF criticized Meta, calling this action "untrustworthy" behavior.

Experts also pointed out that disappearing conversations could create safety problems because without records, it's difficult to hold anyone accountable. Meta stated that this feature currently only supports text and cannot upload images.
