China & WorldMali Defence Minister Killed as JNIM and Tuareg Rebels Launch Largest Coordinated Offensive Since 2012
Since April 25, JNIM militants and Tuareg rebels launched coordinated attacks across multiple Malian cities, killing Defence Minister Sadio Camara. The offensive is the largest armed operation in Mali since the 2012 rebellion.
Starting April 25, Mali came under large-scale coordinated attacks by Islamic armed organization JNIM and Tuareg rebel forces. Armed militants launched attacks against the capital Bamako and multiple strategic locations, including Kati military base, Sevare, and Mopti.
Mali's Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed in the attacks, while intelligence chief Modibo Kone was wounded in the operation. JNIM subsequently issued a statement, claiming responsibility for the coordinated multi-location attacks, with targets including President Assimi Goita's official residence.
This offensive is considered the largest armed operation in Mali since the 2012 rebellion, severely testing the authorities' security control capabilities. Large numbers of civilians were forced to flee, with eyewitness testimonies of atrocities emerging from refugee camps, and the situation continuing to deteriorate.
The international community has expressed grave concern, with multiple humanitarian organizations issuing warnings regarding Mali's security situation.
