A massive explosion struck a fireworks factory in Liuyang, Hunan Province, killing at least 26 people and injuring 61. President Xi Jinping ordered an investigation and the person in charge of the factory has been detained.
On the afternoon of May 4th, a violent explosion occurred in a workshop at the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing Company in Liuyang City, Hunan Province.
The explosion occurred at approximately 4:43 PM. The powerful shock wave shattered windows of surrounding buildings.
This explosion resulted in at least 26 deaths and 61 injuries.
Rescue operations became extremely difficult due to residual black powder and other flammable materials at the scene.
Over 1,500 firefighters, rescue workers, and medical personnel participated in the rescue operations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed deep concern about this incident and ordered a comprehensive investigation.
The company executives involved in the incident have been detained by police.
Liuyang City, known as the world's fireworks capital, has ordered all local fireworks manufacturers to suspend production.
