China & WorldTaiwan Opposition KMT Chairwoman Accepts Xi Invitation for China Visit After a Decade
Taiwan opposition KMT chairwoman Cheng Li-wun announced she will accept Xi Jinping invitation and visit the Chinese mainland from April 7 to 12. This is the first visit by a KMT leader in nearly ten years, coming at a sensitive moment for cross-strait and China-US relations.
Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of Taiwan's largest opposition party, the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), announced that she will accept an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping and lead a delegation to visit Chinese mainland.
According to reports, this visit is scheduled for April 7-12, and the delegation will successively visit Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Beijing. This is the first formal visit by a KMT leader to Chinese mainland in nearly ten years. The previous visit was in November 2016.
Given the current tense state of cross-strait relations, the timing of this visit is particularly sensitive and has triggered widespread public attention both within Taiwan and internationally. The KMT claims this trip aims to reduce cross-strait misjudgment risks and promote dialogue as its main theme, not involving political negotiations.
Chinese official media has not yet formally confirmed whether Cheng can directly meet with Xi Jinping, only expressing welcome for her visit. This visit coincides with the Trump government's plans to visit Beijing in May, making the cross-strait strategic competition landscape increasingly complex. Some Taiwanese politicians worry this action might trigger strong voter backlash before Taiwan's year-end local elections.
