Israel announced that Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the leader of the Hamas military wing, was killed in a Gaza air strike. Israel identified him as one of the planners of the October 7, 2023 attacks.
Israel Defense Forces confirmed on May 16 that Hamas armed wing's top commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad was killed in a targeted operation in Gaza. Haddad was known as the Ghost of al-Qassam due to his extremely secretive operations. He was one of the highest-ranking surviving decision-makers within Hamas. Israel designated him as a main architect of the October 7, 2023 attack and claimed he participated in hostage detention decisions. Previously, Israel had successively killed multiple senior Hamas leaders. The strike occurred while a ceasefire agreement nominally remained in effect, with Israel insisting the operation targeted imminent threats. Hamas has not formally commented but Gaza mosques announced the death.
