Iran Appoints Mojtaba Khamenei as New Supreme Leader After Father is Killed

Iran Assembly of Experts announced on March 8 that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as Iran third Supreme Leader, marking a historic first for the Islamic Republic.

After five days of deliberations, Iran's Assembly of Experts announced on March 8, 2026 that it has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's new Supreme Leader. Currently aged 56 years old, Mojtaba is the son of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israel joint military operation on February 28 at the age of 85. Mojtaba previously rarely appeared in public and operated long-term behind the scenes, described in American diplomatic cables as the invisible power manipulator. This is the first time since the founding of the Islamic Republic that supreme power has been passed down through familial bloodline relationships, drawing widespread attention from the international community.
