BusinessIndia Overtakes Japan to Become World Fourth Largest Economy
IMF data confirms India has surpassed Japan to become the world fourth largest economy with a nominal GDP of around $4.8 trillion. The shift reflects the rising influence of emerging Asian economies in the global order.
According to the latest data from the International Monetary Fund, India has surpassed Japan and officially become the world's fourth largest economy. India's 2025 nominal GDP is approximately $4.8 trillion, with full-year economic growth rate reaching 8.2%.
By comparison, Japan, affected by persistent Japanese yen weakness and export declines, has its 2026 economic growth rate projected at only approximately 0.5%. India's rapid growth is primarily driven by infrastructure investment, robust domestic consumption, and rapid service sector expansion.
Additionally, India's government-promoted structural reforms and digital economy development have also become important supports for economic takeoff. Analysts predict that at current growth rates, India is expected to surpass Germany within a few years and break into the global top three economies.
Japan's Prime Minister stated that the government will advance an economic revitalization plan to improve domestic productivity and stabilize the Japanese yen exchange rate.
