India implemented new customs and baggage rules on April 1, halving the personal goods import duty from 20 to 10 percent and raising the duty-free allowance to 75,000 rupees, with new deferred payment options for manufacturers.
India's government announced on April 1 a series of new tariff and luggage regulations that will reduce personal goods import taxes by half, from 20% to 10%, representing a 50% reduction.
The new rules will raise the duty-free allowance for travelers from 50,000 rupees to 75,000 rupees, and allow travelers aged 18 and above to bring one duty-free laptop computer into the country.
The government also launched an import duty deferred payment scheme allowing eligible manufacturers to pay import duties monthly in installments between April 2026 and March 2028.
This adjustment aims to lower import costs, attract more foreign capital manufacturing enterprises to establish factories in India, and advance the government's Make in India strategy.
However, preferential tax rates for some goods were simultaneously withdrawn. For example, EPDM rubber import tariffs were raised from 7.5% to 10 percent.
Analysts believe this reform is an important measure to optimize India's indirect tax system, which will help enhance domestic manufacturing competitiveness in the global supply chain.
