China & WorldPeter Magyar Defeats Viktor Orban to End 16-Year Rule in Hungary
Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar won 53.6 percent of the vote in the April 12 parliamentary election, with his Tisza party taking 138 of 199 seats and ending Viktor Orban 16-year rule. Voter turnout exceeded 77 percent, a post-Communist record for Hungary.
On April 12, Hungary held parliamentary elections that resulted in a historic shift in the country's political landscape. Opposition leader Peter Magyar's Tisza Party achieved an overwhelming victory, decisively defeating Viktor Orbán, who had held the prime minister position for 16 consecutive years.
With 97.35 percent of ballots counted, the Tisza Party secured 53.6 percent of the vote share, winning 138 parliamentary seats. In sharp contrast, Orbán's Fidesz party, which had dominated Hungarian politics, received only 37.8 percent and won just 55 seats. The election turnout exceeded 77 percent, setting an all-time historical record for Hungary's post-Communist era.
Magyar delivered a victory speech before tens of thousands of supporters, declaring that truth had prevailed over falsehoods. Orbán subsequently conceded defeat, ending his 16-year political reign. European Union officials welcomed the election results, hoping the new government may clear obstacles for providing 90 billion euros in loans to Ukraine and restore better relations between Hungary and the EU. Magyar pledged to rebuild Hungary's relationship with the European Union and unite Hungarian citizens.
