BusinessEU Parliament Votes to Advance US-EU Trade Deal With Safeguard Conditions
The European Parliament voted 417 to 154 on March 26 to advance the US-EU trade agreement, while adding a sunrise clause requiring the US to cut tariffs on European steel and aluminum before the deal takes effect.
On March 26, the European Parliament passed a resolution advancing the US-EU trade agreement with 417 votes in favor. This agreement is based on the US-EU accord reached in July 2025 in Scotland.
According to the agreement, the United States will impose 15 percent tariffs on EU goods, while the EU will eliminate all tariffs on US industrial products.
However, the European Parliament added three protective clauses: sunrise, sunset, and suspension provisions as safeguards.
The sunrise clause requires the United States to first reduce tariffs on EU steel and aluminum products to 15 percent before the EU can begin reducing tariffs.
Currently, European Parliament representatives and EU member states will begin final negotiations on April 13. The final vote is expected to take place in May or June of this year.
