BusinessEU Votes to Impose 25 Percent Retaliatory Tariffs on 22 Billion Euros of US Goods
EU member states voted to impose 25 percent retaliatory tariffs on roughly 22 billion euros of US goods including orange juice, poultry, almonds, steel and aluminum. All members except Hungary voted in favor, with the first tranche of tariffs set to take effect on April 15.
EU member states on April 4 voted by overwhelming majority to pass a proposal for levying retaliatory tariffs on US goods. This tariff measure will cover approximately 22 billion euros of US goods with 25% tariff rate. Affected goods include orange juice, poultry, almonds, steel and aluminum products among multiple categories. Among 27 member states, except for Hungary, all remaining countries voted in favor. This move aims to respond to the United States 25% import tariffs on European steel and aluminum products. EU trade commissioner emphasized EU prefers to resolve trade disputes through negotiation channels rather than standing by watching unilateralism harm European interests. The first tranche tariffs is expected to take effect starting April 15, with the second tranche scheduled for May 15 implementation. Analysts warned that continuous trade war escalation will cause serious impact on European export-oriented industries.
