Hackers Steal 92 Gigabytes of Data From European Commission AWS Account in Sophisticated Breach

Hackers breached the European Commission AWS cloud account in late March, stealing around 92 gigabytes of data including officials personal information, emails, and confidential documents.

On March 19, hackers stole an API key and breached the European Commission's Amazon cloud account. Hackers implanted malicious code in the open-source security tool Trivy, which the EU Commission unknowingly downloaded in its infected version. Using the stolen key, hackers accessed large amounts of sensitive data stored on the cloud by the commission. Hackers claimed to have stolen approximately 92 gigabytes of compressed data. Stolen content includes official names, email addresses, email messages, and classified contracts among other sensitive materials. The EU cybersecurity agency CERT-EU attributed this attack to a criminal organization called TeamPCP. This incident may have affected data security of at least 29 EU institutions. The EU Executive Commission stated that internal administrative systems were not affected and the Europa website operates normally. Analysts point out that the EU is known for promoting strict data protection legislation, and this breach presents a severe test for its own cybersecurity governance.
