Ethiopian Airlines announced on April 20th that it will convert its purchase options for six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners into firm orders, expanding its intercontinental route network. This conversion is part of a major order placed in 2023. The airline currently operates Africa's largest Boeing 787 fleet with twenty 787-8 aircraft and ten 787-9 aircraft. The newly ordered aircraft will be used to expand routes from Addis Ababa to Europe, Asia, and North America. The airline stated that new aircraft will also be used to increase cargo capacity to meet continuously growing cargo demand. In January of this year, Ethiopian Airlines separately announced the purchase of nine additional Boeing 787 aircraft, demonstrating its active expansion intentions.
