Detroit Three Automakers Cut Over 20,000 Jobs as AI Drives Industry Restructuring

General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis have together cut over 20,000 salaried jobs as they restructure around artificial intelligence and software-defined vehicles. GM this week laid off around 600 IT workers while expanding hiring for AI roles.

Detroit's three major automakers have collectively laid off over 20,000 salaried positions since the decade's peak, representing 19% of combined workforce. GM announced this week cutting 500-600 IT employees in Texas and Michigan. Despite this, GM simultaneously recruits AI and autonomous driving talent with over 250 open AI-related positions. Analysts note this reflects the automotive industry's structural transformation toward software-defined vehicles. Ford and Stellantis similarly cut white-collar positions while freeing resources for EVs and AI platforms. Detroit automakers face the challenge of cutting traditional IT functions while maintaining sufficient technical competitiveness.
