China & WorldChina Implements Zero-Tariff Treatment for 53 African Nations
Starting May 1, China extended zero-tariff treatment to 53 African countries with diplomatic ties, becoming the first major economy to offer full-coverage duty-free access to all diplomatic partner nations in Africa.
Starting from May 1st, China has comprehensively implemented zero-tariff treatment for 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations. China has therefore become the first major economy to provide unilateral, full-coverage zero-tariff treatment to all African countries it has established diplomatic ties with. This policy covers 53 out of Africa's 54 countries, with the sole exception being Eswatini, which maintains formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. On May 1st itself, the first batch of zero-tariff goods arrived in China, including apples from South Africa, avocados from Kenya, and oranges from Egypt. In 2025, China-Africa trade reached a record $348.08 billion, with year-on-year growth of 26.8 percent in the first quarter of 2026. This zero-tariff policy is seen as an important initiative by China to deepen its diplomatic and economic cooperation with Africa.
