BusinessChina Bans Industrial Sulphuric Acid Exports From May, Squeezing Global Supply
China formally banned exports of industrial sulphuric acid from May 2026, a move expected to significantly disrupt global mining and agricultural supply chains, as Iran war disruptions had already cut off Middle East sulphur supplies.
Starting from May 1, 2026, China formally banned the export of industrial sulphuric acid and sulphuric acid as a by-product of smelting and metallurgical operations.
The background of this ban is that the Iran war led to the Strait of Hormuz being effectively closed off, which disrupted the supply of sulphur from the Middle East.
China was the world's largest exporter of sulphuric acid in 2025, with total exports valued at approximately $290 million.
This ban particularly affects major importing countries such as Chile and Indonesia. The impact on these countries is especially significant.
Copper mines, nickel smelting, and nitrogen fertiliser producers all face risks of raw material shortages.
Market analysts forecast that the ban will remove approximately 3 million tonnes of supply from the global ocean shipping market.
