BusinessChina Exports Surge 21.8 Percent as Trade Surplus Hits Record High
China exports jumped 21.8 percent year-on-year in January and February, with the trade surplus hitting a record high. Analysts warn the strong figures may mask weakness in domestic demand.
China's export data from January to February far exceeded expectations, with year-on-year growth of 21.8 percent, marking the strongest performance in nearly four years.
The General Administration of Customs released data showing that the combined export total for the two months reached $656.58 billion, with a trade surplus setting an all-time record high of $213.62 billion.
Exports to ASEAN countries grew by 29.4 percent, and exports to the European Union grew by 27.8 percent. However, exports to the United States declined by 11 percent.
Semiconductor exports grew by 66.5 percent, representing the fastest growth rate in over a decade, driven by global memory chip shortages.
Imports rose year-on-year by 19.8 percent, far exceeding economists' forecast of 6.3 percent, marking the strongest import growth since early 2022.
Analysts pointed out that some of the export growth may reflect companies rushing to export ahead of the tightening of United States tariffs.
Despite impressive export performance, some economists warned that this data may mask weakness in China's domestic demand.
